“Create in me a clean heart, O God—and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

Like a jigsaw puzzle with pieces misplaced

So are our lives sometimes;

One minute we’re up and the next moment we’re down

As we criticize, complain and whine.

Our fuses grow short and our tongues grow sharp,p> When things don’t go our way—

And before we know it we go off half-cocked

Without thinking about the things we say.

That’s why we need to ask God’s help

If we truly want a brand-new start,

For it’s impossible to change the way we are

Without His first changing our heart.

Only by realizing our need of Him

And submitting to His transforming power

Are we able to be changed from the inside out

In each and every hour.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God,”

Must be our fervent prayer—

For apart from this sincere prayer of repentance

It’s clear that we really don’t care.

“Yes, create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a right spirit within me;

For apart from Your help I’ll always be the same,

But in You I can truly be free.

“Transform my thoughts and fill my mind

With holy thoughts of You;

Then, change my will to obey Your Word

In all I attempt to do.

Yes, create in me a clean heart, O God

And fill it with Your sweet love;

Then, help me to share it with each one I meet

That they, too, might know You, the Father, up above.” Tom Smith
