“And they said one to another, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us, while He talked with us by the way and while He opened to us the Scriptures’?” Luke 24:32

Throughout our lives we find ourselves

In search of excitement and pleasures;

We look for them in thrills and spills

That will titillate us beyond all measure.

So often we go in pursuit of fame

And fortune without bounds,

In hope that they will satisfy our hungering hearts

–Why, the greatest we’ve ever found!

But soon we discover that they cannot fill

The emptiness within the soul;

No, power, possessions and the applause of men

Can never give us great joy untold.

Only the love of God that’s freely given

Can quench the thirsty heart;

Only the Joy that’s Heaven-sent

Can give us a brand-new start.

Yet, even then, there are times when our lives

Grow stale and seem to become so old;

Our hearts grow cold and our eyes grow dry

As pains and sorrows do unfold.

But, it’s in those moments when our dreams have been dashed

Upon the hard rocks of reality,

That we must cry out to God with all our heart,

“O quicken me, Lord—yes, quicken me.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a right spirit within me,

So that once again my soul does sing

With praise and thanksgiving to Thee.

“Yes, quicken me, Lord—O quicken me

By Your Spirit and Your Word;

Make my heart to blaze so brightly once more

With the greatest Story that’s ever been heard.”
